The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
