France to begin stopping migrant vessels in English Channel following British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting small boats in the Channel, following an extended period of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the President asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to official statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a danger to both officers and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police spokesperson says officers will start intervening at sea, with the aim of safeguarding lives.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a significant step forward, coming after a brief shift towards a stricter strategy this summer, which dropped off when the former government official departed from office.
That was highlighted in the summer month, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a vessel.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they pick up migrant passengers from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's not clear how the small boats will be stopped.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of interceptions and the people-smuggling gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to evade detection, as they have frequently done in the past.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for response.
