The protests were organized to call for changes to the political system following October's post-election unrest which resulted in an unconfirmed death toll.
Authorities Admit Use of Force
The authorities have admitted employing force against demonstrators, claiming that certain elements aimed to topple the government.
On Tuesday, reporters observed streets that were largely deserted in the business hub, Dar es Salaam. This stood in sharp contrast to the city's typical weekday activity.
Although quiet, the atmosphere remained tense.
Increased Police Presence Nationwide
Security vehicles were seen driving along primary thoroughfares and junctions, while officers took up positions at key points, including around key public infrastructure.
Through online platforms, organizers advised supporters to stay alert, suggesting any demonstrations were unlikely to begin until the afternoon. This communication mirrored past mobilization efforts in the country, when participation grew as the day progressed.
Motorists who ventured out reported frequent checks at roadblocks, where police interrogated motorists about where they were headed.
Government Stance and Prohibitions
The government has not issued specific statements on the increased security or on the scheduled demonstrations.
Tanzanian authorities have banned the intended demonstrations and cancelled independence day celebrations, advising the public to remain at home.
