In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Political Partnership
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
