During an first day in office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, promising “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Leader

The young democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the public whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing essential functions: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and ensuring reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
